My 21st Century Classroom

My 21st Century Classroom

Welcome: Hey everyone I'm Michael Carbonara. I'm a mid-level education mathematics major at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and this post is for my SEDU 183 Final. The video below is my "I believe" video that we were assigned to make not to long ago. This video is about my personal views on teaching.

My Classroom:

As seen above my students will be split up into six tables with four students at each table. By doing so I’m influencing collaboration between the students of each table and allowing them to teach each other. With the way the classroom is set up the students are being pushed into more communication based learning. They will be allowed time in the beginning and end of class to discuss and work in order to get them to interact with each other and myself more.

Rituals and Routines:
At the beginning of each week I will randomly pick a student in the class by pulling their names out of a jar. This student will be the “Teacher’s Assistant” during the week. What they’ll do is help pass papers, tests, and quizzes that we may have. Every day the students will come into class and have “MATH MINUTES” to do on the Smart Board which is represented in the photo by the projector. The “MATH MINUTES” will consist of 5-10 questions and the students will be given 5-10 minutes to complete the questions. The questions will always have at least two questions of past materials in order to help them remember the material throughout the year. Next we will review the home work from the night before. This daily ritual allows for collaboration and communication based learning between the students because they are given a certain amount of time to work on their “MATH MINUTES” and if they are having trouble there are three other people there who can help.

Instructional Glimpse:
Each day before the students walk into the classroom there will be a series of problems called “MATH MINUTES” on the Smart Board which is represented by the projector in the picture above. The students and their group will be responsible for solving the problems in the first 5-10 minutes in class. We will then review the “MATH MINUTES” together as a class and move onto the homework from the night before. Students will be told to make changes and fix problems in pen while the class is reviewing the homework then turn it in. I do this so that I may determine their understanding of the material and adjust my plans accordingly. Next we’ll move onto the Objective of the day which is a very basic outline of what it is we will be doing that day in class. Then I will teach the lesson and at certain points throughout the lesson I will verbally check for a class understanding of what was just taught. If everyone says they understand then as a class we shall continue, but if a majority says they do not understand then I will go back over the material once more. When we are done with the lesson the students will do a series of three Wrap Up questions so they can practice what they’ve just learned. At the end of every class the students will be given group time in which each table can either look back over that days lesson and come ask me questions, work on the homework, or that group can do either or. The amount of group time given all depends on how long it takes us to get through the material for that day. However, any the students are not allowed to work with anyone outside their groups table unless instructed otherwise.

My Technology Integration:
I will use a Smart Board in my everyday class instruction and assessment. Student will be asked to come up to the Smart Board and either to solve the math equations already on the board, to write their tables answer and then explain it, or to write the number and problem from the homework which they, as an individual student, would like to be furthered explained and shown by me the teacher. I will also introduce the website Dr. Math to them and show them how to use it when they are home and don’t understand the math homework equations.

PLN:
This semester we have been taught many ways to incorporate technology in to our classrooms through the use of certain tools. We were shown tools such as Facebook, twitter, and blogging. In my class I would set up a blog and twitter account that the students could view when needed to at home or in the schools computer labs. I would use the blog to put up interesting news videos that may pertain to the students, instructional videos that I believe the class should watch, and “recap” videos of my lessons I think the students need again. Twitter would be used as a simple and efficient way to notify the students of new material on the blog.
